Where should I start?

With Map of Shadows, book 1. The trilogy reads as one continuous story: the border, the plague, and the balance.

Is the trilogy complete?

Yes. Three books, one story, and an ending that fully resolves. No cliffhangers.

How dark is it?

Adult dark fantasy in the tradition of Shadow and Bone and Neverwhere: real darkness, warm found-family, and a bittersweet, luminous ending. Some of the hardest material is implied rather than shown, and each book page carries a discreet content note.

Is the dog okay?

Zippy the cocker spaniel is safe in all three books, and ends the trilogy much loved.

Is it connected to J.F. Penn's other books?

A separate world, but built from the same research obsessions: the border politics grew from the West Bank research trip behind ARKANE's End of Days, and readers of the thrillers will recognise the relics, sacred places and hidden institutions.
